As the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, a retired police officer, and a nurse, I was raised to believe that service isn’t something you talk about. It’s something you live. My family taught me to show up for my community.At 17, that path led me to the U.S. Army, where I later Commissioned as a Tank Commander. I learned responsibility, leadership, and what it means to put something bigger than yourself first. After the military, service didn’t stop. I continued it as a foster parent and advocate for children and families.Now, I'm running for Congress in Virginia's First District. Running for office isn’t about a title. But every meaningful turning point in my life has come from choosing the path that asked more of me—the one that required service, grit, and heart.At 17, that path led me to the U.S. Army. I raised my hand and took an oath to the Constitution. I became a Tank Commander—one of the first women to serve in that combat arms role—not because it was easy, but because it was right. Because when something matters, you don’t stand on the sidelines.And when the uniform came off, service didn’t.I became a foster parent and an advocate for kids who deserved safety, stability, and love. I thrived in corporate leadership but knew service was on my heart. I learned quickly that doing the right thing is rarely convenient. Sometimes it means waking up in the middle of the night with a child who has never felt safe. Sometimes it means fighting systems that weren’t built with working families in mind. But you do it anyway—because it matters.People often ask why I chose to run for Congress now, at 29, with four children five and under. The truth is simple: how could I not?Because our children deserve better—mine and yours. Because our veterans deserve real support, not slogans. Because families deserve leaders who understand sacrifice. Because communities deserve someone who will fight for them even when it’s hard—especially when it’s hard.The day after I filed to run, a package arrived from my mom—sent before she even knew. Inside were quilts she made for children in foster care, old photos, and a letter I wrote to the local newspaper when I was seven. In that letter, I told them they needed to publish more about the resources in our community, because people wanted to help but didn’t know where to turn.At seven years old, I wasn’t asking for the easy path either. I was asking for the right one.And that’s still who I am.I’m running for Congress because service never stops—and because doing the right thing is worth the fight every single time.

Veteran, mother, and foster parent enters crowded Democratic primary to challenge vulnerable Republican incumbent Rob WittmanHanover Co., VA - Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs, a U.S. Army veteran, mother, foster parent, and outspoken advocate for working families, has officially begun collecting petition signatures as part of her campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District.Beggs entered the race in December, joining a crowded field of Democratic candidates seeking to take on long-time Republican incumbent Rob Wittman, who Democrats view as aligned with an out-of-touch brand of MAGA conservativism and vulnerable in this year’s midterm elections.“From the moment I entered this race, I’ve been focused on listening to voters and showing up for the people,” said Beggs. “Collecting petition signatures is about more than qualifying for the ballot, it’s about making a connection, building relationships, and hearing voters’ concerns.”Beggs brings a deeply personal and service-driven background to the race. “I’m a candidate who understands service, sacrifice, and the realities families are facing,” said Beggs. <h5>"It is our responsibility to use those blessings to take care of others," Elizabeth Dempsey says of her Angel Tree</h5>By Virginia ChamleeA mom on TikTok says that her budget for her Angel Tree — a viral movement that encourages people to donate gifts to children and elderly people in need for Christmas — is larger than that for her own children's gifts.Elsewhere in the video — which has been viewed more than 767,000 times — mom Elizabeth Dempsey adds, "For me, in my house, Christmas and the holiday season is about taking care of our community, and I think that is the greatest gift I can give my children."As Dempsey explains, her own children — ages 2 and 3 — "have plenty of toys, they have plenty of shoes, they just went on a Disney cruise.""They are fine — but what I do feel like is important for them to know is any financial blessings we have are a gift from God. Yes, we work hard. And yes, we have struggled. And now that we're in a place that we're not, it is our responsibility to use those blessings to take care of others."Dempsey adds that she even enlisted her own children to help her shop for the recipients of the Angel Tree gifts."They did a really good job shopping this year, and they understood they were shopping for other kids and not themselves," she says.In another video, Dempsey shares highlights from her trip go shop for the Angel Tree. <h5>By Emma Tucker, Taylor Galgano and Zenebou Sylla, CNN</h5>When Elisa Smithers was deployed to Iraq in 2005, there was a ban on women serving in ground combat operations.Smithers was a “female searcher” with the National Guard and was attached to an infantry unit to help with searching detained Iraqi women, among other tasks. But she returned home to find she wasn’t offered the same support by the US Department of Veterans Affairs that male combat veterans were offered, Smithers said.Now, the 48-year-old veteran fears the progress made for women in combat since then will be reversed after President-elect <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/12/politics/pete-hegseth-secretary-of-defense/index.html">Donald Trump announced Pete Hegseth</a> this week as his pick for secretary of defense – a Fox News host and Army veteran who has criticized efforts to allow women into combat roles.The ban on women serving in ground combat units <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2015/12/03/politics/u-s-military-women-combat-positions/index.html">was lifted in 2013</a> and, in 2016, all US military combat positions were opened to them, allowing women to fill about 220,000 jobs that were previously limited to men – including infantry, armor, reconnaissance and some special operations units. Women account for roughly 17.5% of the Defense Department’s active-duty force, according to 2022 data from the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3580676/defense-department-report-shows-decline-in-armed-forces-population-while-percen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">agency</a>.Hegseth, who has a long record serving in the military in Afghanistan and Iraq, has not announced any plans to reinstate the ban if he’s confirmed, but has previously accused the military of lowering standards to allow women into combat jobs.Speaking about his book, “The War on Warriors,” published this year, Hegseth said in a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoN5ovwB8s4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">podcast</a> he was surprised “there hasn’t been more blowback” on the book, “because I’m straight up just saying, we should not have women in combat roles.”“It hasn’t made us more effective, hasn’t made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. … We’ve all served with women, and they’re great,” Hegseth said last week on “The Shawn Ryan Show.” “But our institutions don’t have to incentivize that in places where, traditionally — not traditionally, over human history — men in those positions are more capable.”Even if a combat exclusion policy is reinstated, Smithers said women will still be pushed into such roles in an unofficial capacity like she was, just with less recognition and access to benefits like before.“They will still need these women in these roles,” Smithers told CNN. “So, we’ll go back to this, like, pseudo attaching them to the unit. And then this perception by the men that, you know, the women are not in combat roles.”US Army veteran Elizabeth Beggs said women in military service have already proven they’re capable.“Let’s not get it twisted. Women have been in combat since the beginning of history,” Beggs said.But she does agree with Hegseth on one thing: “Not all women are capable – just like not all men are capable,” Beggs said.<h3>Vets say Hegseth is diminishing women’s accomplishments</h3>More than 2 million female veterans live in the US – and the number is expected to continue to grow, according to the <a href="https://www.womenshealth.va.gov/materials-and-resources/facts-and-statistics.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Department of Veterans Affairs</a>.The combat exclusion policy was lifted shortly before 27-year-old Beggs joined the US Army. She went on to hold several roles during her four years of service, including armor officer, tank commander and platoon leader.“I believe it’s incredibly divisive to water down and diminish the accomplishments that I and other women have made serving in these roles, not just to women, but to men who’ve gone through the same courses and hit the same standards, especially in a time where we should be unifying,” Beggs said.Lory Manning, a 25-year Navy veteran, takes issue with Hegseth accusing the military of lowering standards to allow women into jobs with the Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, Army Special Forces, Marine Special Operations, and jobs such as those in infantry, armor and artillery units.Hegseth has specifically criticized having women in roles where strength “is the differentiator,” he said on the podcast last week.“I’m not talking about pilots… I’m talking about physical, labor-intensive type jobs,” Hegseth said. “Seals, Rangers, Green Berets, MARSOC, infantry battalions, armor, artillery.”Manning, also the former director for the Service Women’s Action Network, said Hegseth’s assertion the military lowered their standards to accommodate women is a false, yet repeated one.“Sometimes, it’s said to protect women who don’t need protecting,” Manning said.In <a href="https://www.aclu.org/news/womens-rights/baloney-message-women-combat-naysayers" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a 2013 op-ed</a> for the American Civil Liberties Union, Manning refuted the claim that “tough combat training standards will be lowered by making them ‘equal’ for both genders.”“Women have already been integrated into air and sea combat duties with no lowering of standards,” Manning wrote.While the ban on women participating in ground combat operations wasn’t lifted until 2013, women have been flying in combat operations and serving aboard US combatant ships since the early ’90s.Like Manning, veteran Smithers believes a woman should be allowed to serve if they qualify for the “physical, labor-intensive type jobs” that Hegseth has a problem with them taking on.“At the end of the day, in order for us to be a dynamic and agile force and the great military that we are, we’ve got to have diversity. For too many Virginians, the American Dream hasn’t just slipped out of reach, it feels like someone moved it entirely.This crisis didn’t appear overnight. It is the direct result of decades of short-sighted economic policy that prioritized corporate profits and billionaire wealth over the stability of working families. The wealth gap in this country is now wider than at any point since the Great Depression. While CEOs and large corporations post record profits, families in the middle are drowning under the rising costs of simply existing.As a New Deal Democrat, I believe that a strong economy begins with strong families. We know from history that when working people have stability, opportunity, and fair wages, the entire economy grows. When families thrive, small businesses grow. We must create pathways into management, skilled trades, cybersecurity, engineering, logistics, and leadership roles where veterans’ experience can shine.<h3>3. Expanding Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Resources</h3>We lose more veterans to suicide than we ever should. Expanding crisis support, peer programs, transition assistance, and access to culturally competent mental health providers is essential. Transitioning out of service shouldn’t feel like falling off a cliff — and no veteran should ever feel alone.<h3>4. Protecting GI Bill, Home Loan, and Earned Benefits</h3>These benefits were promised — and they must be protected. I will oppose any attempt to privatize, limit, or undercut the GI Bill, and I will work to ensure veterans have the support they need to buy homes, pursue education, and build stable futures.<h2>Why This Matters</h2>Service is not a political talking point — it is a bond of trust. And in too many places, the justice system has become something it was never meant to be: a for-profit industry, driven by fees, fines, and incarceration quotas rather than fairness and rehabilitation.We can do better—and we must.<h2>Investing in Communities to Prevent Crime</h2>Communities with strong schools, accessible childcare, stable jobs, and affordable housing experience significantly lower crime rates. When we invest in people, we reduce the factors that lead to crime and create long-term public safety.That means expanding after-school programs, supporting youth mentorship opportunities, increasing access to mental health care, and creating job pipelines for young adults. Prevention isn’t “soft”—it is the smartest, most cost-effective approach to public safety we have.Public safety is not just a policing issue. We must eliminate private prisons and end predatory practices like exorbitant court fees, cash bail systems that punish poverty, and probation structures that trap people in endless cycles of debt and incarceration.Reform is not about being lenient—it’s about being effective. We need policies that reduce repeat offenses, support reentry, and ensure that punishment fits the crime. Justice should be equal, consistent, and guided by data, not by profit margins.<h2>A Balanced Approach: Accountability and Opportunity</h2>Lowering crime requires a “carrot and stick” approach. Criminalizing marijuana has clogged the justice system, disproportionately targeted communities of color, and drained resources without making communities safer.Legalization paired with expungement of low-level marijuana offenses will:• Reduce unnecessary incarceration • Generate new tax revenue • Improve public health oversight • Allow law enforcement to focus on serious crimeAddiction should be treated as a public health issue, not a criminal one. We need more treatment beds, more mental health professionals, and more early-intervention programs to break cycles before they begin.<h2>Common-Sense Gun Safety</h2>Gun violence is an epidemic - and there is balance between public safety and responsible firearm ownership. I support an assault weapons and high capacity (more than 12) magazine ban. Ghost guns are becoming the largest threats to all of our safety. To combat this I support expanding background checks, ban private sales of firearms, and banning 3D printing of firearm or firearm parts. We must close the Charleston loophole and federally mandate waiting periods of 7 days. <h2>Why This Matters</h2>Every parent wants to raise their children in a neighborhood where they feel safe walking to school, playing outside, or running errands. Every family wants a justice system they can trust—one that protects them, treats them fairly, and invests in their future.Public safety is not created by slogans. It’s created by smart investments, modern policies, and accountable systems that focus on real results. When we strengthen our communities, we strengthen our safety. When we reform our justice system, we restore trust. And when we approach crime prevention holistically, we build a safer future for everyone.A strong, safe community is one where opportunity is wide, accountability is fair, and everyone has a stake in the success of their neighbors.
